biography

Tamsin Dearnley is a harpist and composer. Born in the UK, she began to study the harp at the age of nine, and began her professional career just two years later.

Since then, Tamsin has travelled extensively throughout the UK to perform and teach. She has appeared at some of the most prestigious venues in the North of England and Scotland, including Ripley Castle, the Royal Museum of Scotland, Swinton Park, the Marcliffe Hotel and Rudding Park House, where she is a regular performer.

She has a great deal of experience in performing at concerts and events of all sizes, from intimate gatherings to spectacular occasions presided over by Lord Mayors and MPs. She is also trained in circus skills and performance art, and has provided music (both composed and improvised) for theatrical performances of every possible description! She also plays with the Edinburgh Film Music Orchestra, which performs and records music by both established and up-and-coming composers for the screen.

Although trained in both the classical and folk harp, Tamsin has studied many different types of harp and their music, including the lightly strung Paraguayan harp and the Japanese koto. She now seeks to combine the techniques and traditions of all these different instruments into her playing, and is constantly seeking to explore the possibilities of her instrument and play more unusual repertoire. She has transcribed works from many different genres for the harp, most notably jazz, which led to her regular appearance at Divino Enoteca, an exclusive wine bar and restaurant in central Edinburgh, throughout 2011.

As well as attaining a First in her undergraduate studies of Japanese, Tamsin also holds a Masters degree in composition from the University of Edinburgh, and has written works for a wide range of ensembles, including an extensive repertoire for the pedal harp.
